LÓRÁND POÓSZ

REACTION OF THE ARMENIAN PRESS

OF GENOCIDE IN THE HUNGARIAN PRESS

OF TRANSYLVANIA

(summary)

The starting-point of my research is a contradictory basic situation, which determines the examination of the Transylvanian reaction evoked by the genocide. A context of war is given in one respect, and within the scope of this context, the Transylvanian public opinion was concerned in crimes perpetrated against a certain nation according as those crimes could influence the outcome of the war. On the other hand, through the Armenian diaspora, which constituted an organic part of the coexistence of nationalities in Transylvania, the population of this region had the possibility to get in touch with the events. So my object was to size up the possibilities of a Transylvanian - Armenian or other national - to be informed of the destiny of the Armenian people, what was the reaction in the press and in the public opinion and, studying the concept of the genocide in a wider sense, what reactions were evoked in the man of the age by the first genocide of the century. To answer these questions, I've checked many Transylvanian periodicals, daily and weekly papers from Kolozsvar and Szamosújvár, public and other newspapers. In the meantime I have had to take into consideration the Hungarian and Romanian censorship (applied during the war and after it), which probably saw in the actions against Armenians only some measures taken by an allied country to win the war and the information of the people felt to prey to this censorship.
